Employers typically collect rent receipts (and sometimes a rent agreement) before granting HRA exemption in payroll. A receipt should show who paid whom, how much, for which month, and which property. This tool formats those elements in a consistent way, adds rent in figures and words, and leaves space for landlord and tenant signatures after you print—similar to what many public rent-receipt utilities offer, without ads or sign-up.
Landlord PAN and the ₹1,00,000 rule of thumb
When annual rentpaid to one landlord crosses ₹ 1,00,000, your employer will often ask for the landlord's PAN or a suitable declaration if PAN is unavailable. Keep identity details aligned with your lease and bank transfers so Form 16 and Form 12BB stay consistent.
Revenue stamp and cash rent
Guidance often cited in India is that cash rent above ₹ 5,000 per payment may need an appropriate revenue stamp; payments through bank, UPI, or cheque may not. Your HR or chartered accountant can confirm the format they expect. The downloaded PDF notes this when you select cash and the rent entered is above ₹5,000.
Frequently asked questions
How many months of receipts does my company need?
Policies vary: some ask for the full financial year, others for the last one to three months of the proof window. Generate the exact span your HR email specifies.
Can I claim HRA only in my ITR without employer proofs?
Depending on facts, an exemption may be taken at filing subject to section 10(13A) conditions and record-keeping. Maintain receipts and agreement in case the assessing officer seeks verification.
Is the PDF digitally signed?
No. Treat it as a draft: print, sign physically (or use an accepted e-sign workflow if your company allows), and upload or hand in per policy.
Can parents be landlords on the receipt?
Some employers accept rent paid to parents if the arrangement is genuine, there is documentation, and transfer records exist. Others restrict related-party leases—check internal FAQs.
Does this replace legal advice?
No. It only helps you format receipts. Tax positions depend on your salary structure, actual rent, metro rules, and employer policy.
